 FADE IN:

EXT. OUTSIDE STEAMCITY – MID DAY
Not far outside the confines of Steam City, a stream in the middle of the forest holds our heroine.  She sits near the stream alone, sharpening her sword. Her back is to the trees and is completely focus on her work, her sheath is on left of her side, on the sheath is the emblem of the Moon Tribe. There’s an opening among the trees that sunlight can directly hit on the space that KIMIKO sits.  A bag half open lays next to a boulder just a three feet from her. She is careful when sharpening the edge of the sword against the water stone. The scene is enveloped by the quiet sound of a flowing stream of water and the sounds of birds.
Her sidekick sit up in the tree behind her. She observes the heroine, KIMIKO, in silence.
SIDEKICK is a winged creature that resides in her mask. SIDEKICK glances at the mask that rest at KIMIKO’S side.
SIDEKICK’S (THOUGHTS):
I wonder if this war is starting to take its toll on her. The last battle was harsher than the last.  I wish that she would tell me more…
SIDEKICK continue watch over her.
KIMIKO:
I don’t like it when you stare at me like that.
SIDEKICK blinks before cocking its head. Still without hesitation, it flies over to KIMIKO’S side.  There is a long pause between the two of them. SIDEKICK tilts its head to the side. It shifts between looking at the sword to her.
SIDEKICK:
You seem very intent on sharping your sword.
KIMIKO smiles irately, still focused on her work.
KIMIKO:
I’m just sharping on my sword, nothing else. After all, it’s foolish not to be take it care of this sword.
SIDEKICK:
Is that so?
There is a pause.
SIDEKICK:
Why are you doing this?
KIMIKO:
(irritably sighs)
 You know why...
KIMIKO picks up the pace of sharpening.
SIDEKICK:
That is not what I mean, Kimiko. I am asking why you do you search for the masks.
KIMIKO:
(grits her teeth)
Because you showed me the future if I look for them. I don’t see the reason why we’re even discussing this…Obviously, finding the masks is important. It’s a lot better than sitting around doing nothing while watching the world burn.
SIDEKICK notices how she is sharpening her sword faster.
SIDEKICK:
That’s not it. At least not all of it. There is more to why you’re working so hard.
KIMIKO:
(sharpens sword faster)
You know what! I am tired of you acting like you know anything! There is nothing more to talk about, especially this when our survival depends on this. That includes your survival as well.  So, I’m not in the mood for your pointless, stupid—Aah!
KIMIKO pulls her thumb away from her sword. She sees a cut across the pad of her thumb. She stick her thumb into her mouth.  There is silence between the two of them. KIMIKO spurs words irritation in her language.
There is a moment of silence between the two.
KIMIKO looks at her sword. She has a mournful and discontent expression on her face. She pulls her thumb out her to notice the cut stopped.
SIDEKICK:
KIMIKO, everything I do is to ensure that you would be successful in uniting the other tribes. I don’t want to see you fail. I want to see you hurt.
SIDEKICK flaps closer to her right side.
SIDEKICK:
(sadden stares)
Please talk to me.
KIMIKO shifts her gaze to the left side.
KIMIKO:
If your kind is so intent on helping us, and protecting us. Why didn’t you stop this beforehand?
SIDEKICK is silent.
KIMIKO picks up her sword by the hilt. The sword glints of the sunlight before reflecting her face. KIMIKO faces SIDEKICK.
KIMIKO:
You know, I was the only girl to ever prepare to take leadership of my clan. My father was told that it was a foolish idea, to have girl as their leader. Many of the other members wanted to marry me off. Possibly to some other warrior of my tribe, I can’t even remember his name now.  But my father wouldn’t have it. He believed in me and gave me this sword. Saying that it holds all the responsibility that would come to being a leader.
KIMIKO sighs. She lowers her sword.
KIMIKO:
I’m not a leader. I’m not even half the leader my father was. If I was, he would be here. He would be the one finding the masks and protecting the people with all their trust like he had done a hundred times. I wouldn’t have lost the capital. And I wouldn’t have had to sit there watching my father die.
KIMIKO has signs of tears in her eyes. She quickly wipes them away.
KIMIKO:
I don’t expect you to understand what that feels like. You’ve been in a mask this whole time, so how could you truly know the feeling of losing someone you care about.
SIDEKICK stares at KIMIKO.
KIMIKO is now gripping the handle of her sword more harshly before placing it back in its sheath. A harsh frown spread across her face. Her eyes an angry stare.
SIDEKICK flies in front of KIMIKO. Depending on its size, it stares at her face.
SIDEKICK:
Your right, I would probably never understand how humans feel. Truthfully, I and the other spirits had not anticipated the growth you have made over the years. Since the masks creation, we expected your people to always depend on us for the rest of your lives. But I have watched your kind for centuries and had made strides despite the odds. I must say impressed is not a word that compares to astonishment we felt since we left the gods.
KIMIKO looks to SIDEKICK in amazement, but does not interrupt.
SIDEKICK:
However, I have watched your kind make war with each other and abuse each other’s trust. You can be greedy and selfish, while using the power that we give you. It is a very rare occasion that we would come across person so willing to put the greater good before themselves. Even some the others spirits had fallen into your ways. It is not an easy job of protecting you when you hurt yourself constantly.
KIMIKO:
(scoffs and eyes narrow)
You make it sound like you’re supposed to be our parents.
SIDEKICK:

We are. We have to guide you when you get lost and support you when you’re confused. I admit that we failed to provide you the council you needed before this mess, but it is important that I protect you now more than ever.
SIDEKICK flies up to land on top of her head. It settles nicely in her hair and yet still keeps eye contact.
SIDEKICK:
I believe you would make a great leader. You wouldn’t been able to use the mask if you weren’t. You don’t have to be your father to be a leader, you just have to strength to be a leader. The rest will come to you naturally. And if it doesn’t, you have me there to do my job.
KIMIKO for the first time since the beginning of the scene laugh. She casually strokes the body of SIDEKICK as a thank you.
KIMIKO:
Thanks. I guess I need this.
SIDEKICK:
Of course.
KIMIKO:
I still hate when you do that questioning thing.
SIDEKICK:
If I don’t ask questions, I won’t know anything.
KIMIKO:
(sigh)
Whatever. But really, I am sorry.
SIDEKICK:
…There is one thing that I would you to do for me, KIMIKO.
KIMIKO:
(eyes closes for a moment and sighs)
What is it?
SIDEKICK:
(pauses)
Don’t let your father’s death effect your judgement.  There are many ways of gaining justice, but being blind to injustice makes you just as bad as the villain.
KIMIKO looks at her sword thoughtfully, her injured thumb brushing against the surface of the emblem.

KIMIKO:
I can’t say what the future holds, SIDEKICK, but I’ll try.
She takes SIDEKICK into her hand and looks at it determined.
KIMIKO:
I promise that I would prove myself worthy of your efforts and that I can be the great leader that you and father believed in.
KIMIKO smiled before resting the spirit creature into her lap. They both share a moment as they stare hopefully into the sky.
FADE OUT.
